This winter, cozy up with this champurrado dish — a rich and warm Mexican beverage amped up with some heat from our Mala Spice Mix. Recipe by Cheska Mae Perez (@nomswithmae).

Cook time: 30 min Prep time: 5 min Serving size: 3 servings
  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 oz piloncillo or 1 tbsp dark brown sugar

  • 1 disc Mexican chocolate 

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • ½ tsp Mala Spice Mix

  • ⅓ cup warm water

  • ¼ cup masa harina or corn flour

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


In a medium saucepan, combine milk, piloncillo, chocolate, and cinnamon on medium heat.

Stir for 5-7 minutes until piloncillo and chocolate have dissolved. 

In a bowl, mix Mala Spice Mix, warm water, masa harina, and vanilla extract together. 

Remove cinnamon stick from the mixture in the saucepan. 

Lower heat and mix in the corn mixture into the saucepan.

Let simmer for 20 - 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Add extra piloncillo or dark brown sugar to taste.
